I love the fact that these pens are handmade making every one unique. Each one has had a craftsperson with years’ experience working over several days creating its existence. They personally check and re check its development to its final conclusion. A very human interaction with the material. An interaction that gives it character, class and personality. Silver is also an amazing metal born from a supernova and to end up in one’s hand as a precious metal writing instrument. It is a real luxurious experience and a privilege to use.

The pen was beyond satisfying - the look and feel is from a time where craftsmanship mattered - it is built not to a price but with pride. The intricate clip fixture, the applied barley pattern, the auditory click when the pen is capped are eclipsed by the actual writing feel - smooth but with sufficient feedback for a sensual experience. Exceptional Fountain Pen!

I have many grail pens which include many Writers Editions Montblanc, Montegrappa, Omas, Scribo, Namiki Urushi, Pineider etc. They are well made and I love them. What makes the Yard-O-Led exceptional is it is a grail pen that is hand made. You will see and feel this immediately when you pick up the pen. The pen is not perfect in the clinical way that a Montblanc is. The perfection of the Yard-O-Led lies in its very human , very subtle imperfections that make you feel a connection with the person that made the pen. Oh, by the way it also writes really well. Well balanced with an excellent nib which has pencil like feedback and a great tactile experience when you run your fingers over the pen. I really like this pen for very different reasons from my other grail pens which is why it is truly exceptional!

I like the Yard O Led Viceroy Grand Barley fountain pen a lot. I like the material, I like the weight of that pen, and it’s a real pleasure to write with that nib. I bought a medium one : the nib is smooth and has the right amount of feedback. The ink flow is perfect. Even if the pen is more on the heavy side, I can use it for long writing sessions without feeling tiredness in my hand. The only thing I would add is that the cap is tight, and I really need both hands to uncap the pen. But that’s a minor inconvenience if I consider all the other great qualities of that pen. Service from Appelboom was excellent !

Bought both the Grand Viceroy and the Grand Barley. The B nib on this is like hot knife on butter. So smooth and wet!
