As the world marks half a century since the Summer of Love, the round symbol that so strongly represented that era – the peace sign – has only grown in meaning. In 2018, the peace sign celebrated its 60th anniversary. It ranks among the most instantly recognisable designs of the 20th century, predating emojis by decades. Its recognisability and universal meaning can be compared to those of the world's most well-known religious, social and political symbols. The message of the peace sign is universal, positive and inspiring.

It was from this spirit of peace and connection that the idea for the Pen of Peace emerged, during a dinner organised by Montegrappa. Among those present were brand representatives from countries including Israel, Lebanon, Iran, India and the United Arab Emirates. Everyone embraced the idea of creating a pen entirely devoted to peace – especially fitting in the turbulent world we live in today. The peace sign was the natural starting point.

Peace, connection and Italian craftsmanship

The Montegrappa Pen of Peace is a remarkable limited edition entirely dedicated to peace, connection and goodwill. Inspired by the iconic peace sign, designed in 1958, this pen brings together a powerful, universal symbol with Italian craftsmanship and refined calligraphy.

Only 1,958 pieces of the Pen of Peace were produced per version: fountain pen, rollerball and ballpoint. The fountain pen features a cartridge/converter filling system and an 18-carat gold nib, engraved with a distinctive dove of peace.

The peace symbol is subtly woven throughout the design, appearing on the top of the cap and at the end of the signature clip. The symbolism is further reinforced by the sky-blue enamel and the laser-engraved pattern depicting children holding hands in a circle.

Peace in 15 languages

One of the most remarkable details is found on the resin body and cap, where the word 'peace' is rendered in 15 different languages. Rather than standard typography, the words are executed as exclusive calligraphic artworks, designed exclusively for Montegrappa by Jake Weidmann, one of the world's foremost calligraphers.

The Pen of Peace also features an ingenious micro-ball-bearing mechanism that allows the barrel to rotate, letting you choose which language is displayed at the front, perfectly aligned with the clip.

This clever construction embodies the idea behind the pen: different languages, cultures and people can coexist, as long as the message remains the same.
